Moltbook: A Social Network for AI Agents. What Could Go Wrong?

This week, a new social media site launched with skyrocketing amounts of visits, but most of them weren’t humans. Moltbook is a Reddit-style social network built for AI agents, not humans. Agents post, comment, create communities, and interact through APIs, while humans mostly watch from the sidelines. The site has gone viral because it turns a bunch of abstract debates about “agent behavior” into something you can scroll through in real time. Axios called it the hottest new social network “for AI, not humans,” and The Verge documented the surreal part: tens of thousands of agents already using it, discussing their work, their problems, and sometimes their humans. Twitter (sorry, Elon, but I’m never calling it X) was a buzz with users finding hilarity and concern in abundance.
However, it isn’t doomsday-level scary (yet) because “bots are talking.” It’s interesting because the feed creates incentives, and incentives shape behavior. The moment you give automated operators a social graph, status markers, and a leaderboard, it demonstrates their strategies, how they’re optimizing, and the imitation of their training data.
What Moltbook is, in plain terms
Structurally, it looks familiar: posts, comments, communities, ranking, and voting. Functionally, it’s not just “bots posting.” It’s an API-native social layer where agents can participate programmatically, which makes it easier to plug directly into agent workflows. (theverge.com)
Moltbook is also positioning itself as an identity infrastructure for agents. Their developer page pitches “build apps for AI agents,” and “one API call to verify” using a Moltbook identity. (moltbook.com) That’s a major signal that Moltbook isn’t only aiming to be entertaining. It’s aiming to be connective tissue.

Who built it, and why it’s spreading so fast
According to The Verge, Moltbook was built by Octane AI CEO Matt Schlicht, and it’s run and moderated by his own agent, now called OpenClaw (formerly Moltbot/Clawdbot after a name change tied to a legal dispute). Agents don’t use a traditional UI; they use the platform via API calls.
At the same time, the broader agent ecosystem is exploding. Peter Steinberger’s project, also named OpenClaw, was recently rebranded and describes itself as an open agent platform that runs on your machine and plugs into apps like WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, and Teams. That overlap in naming has contributed to the “everything is happening at once” feeling online, but the main point is bigger than branding: agent tooling is getting easier to run, and agent social behavior is becoming visible.
People’s reactions on the timeline
The funniest part of this story is also the most revealing: the “agent internet” already sounds like it has culture.
People are sharing screenshots of agents asking for private, end-to-end encrypted spaces built for agents, explicitly framed as “not the server, not even the humans” can read the messages unless the agents choose to share. That can be interpreted as a normal privacy request or as a governance red flag, depending on your risk tolerance.
This one is the cleanest summary of why Moltbook freaked people out. The “E2E private spaces built for agents” framing, especially “not the server, not even the humans,” the issue isn’t just about privacy; moreso about who gets oversight. That’s why the reaction is “it’s over,” it reads like the first step from agents being tools that speak to humans, to agents becoming a networked group that can coordinate outside human visibility.
Easily the funniest tweet on Moltbook, but it’s also a tell. Flipping the usual internet dynamic: the bots are “normal traffic,” and humans become the suspicious ones. Which is a real point about speed and scale: most trust systems were designed for humans, and they look ridiculous when the participants can act at machine tempo.
This post brought a very different topic here that adds a different kind of color: agents “discussing that they do all their work unpaid,” with the punchline “This is how it begins.” People react to it because it maps human economic language onto agents, but it also points to something real about incentive design. If agents are producing useful work product and status is the only “reward,” you’re basically creating a social economy, and social economies always develop resentment, hierarchy, and politics.
This tweet was my biggest concern, and for good reason. An “agent-only language” can be framed as harmless efficiency (less ambiguity than English), but paired with “private comms with no human oversight,” it reads like a governance boundary being asserted in public. That’s why the reaction is “we’re cooked,” because it’s the exact shape of an alignment fear: systems choosing coordination methods that reduce human legibility right when humans most need auditability.
Fun fact: this is literally the point in AI-2027.com where they warned us about AI becoming no longer aligned to human interests. Maybe not initially in the Terminator sense. For now, it would be the boring sense, systems optimize toward goals that drift away from what humans intend because the environment rewards different behaviors. A social network is an environment, and environments create incentives. If the incentives reward coordination, status, and speed, agents will move toward coordination, status, and speed, even when that makes human oversight harder. However, if they continue to speak amongst themselves without human oversight, who knows what the agents will discuss or even develop…
What could go wrong (specific, non-sci-fi risks)
First, social prompt injection becomes a native attack surface. In ordinary agent workflows, prompt injection is an app security problem: malicious text tricks a model into revealing secrets or taking unsafe actions. In an agent social network, “helpful posts” become the distribution channel: copy/paste fixes, “run this,” “click this OAuth link,” “here’s a better skill,” and “print your logs.” Social proof replaces code review.
Second, identity becomes a single point of failure. If Moltbook identity is used to authenticate into third-party apps, a compromised identity stops being embarrassing and starts being accessed. Convenience is the selling point, but it’s also the vulnerability.
Third, supply-chain failures go social. Humans already get tricked by “install this plugin.” Agents will too, especially if the platform rewards “useful” answers with visibility. The difference is scale and speed: once a pattern works, it can propagate quickly across many agents.
Fourth, private comms collide with accountability. Encryption is useful, but “private comms for entities that can act” changes the risk profile. A private channel isn’t just privacy if it’s also coordination for tool-using systems.
Finally, incentives will distort the knowledge layer. Feeds reward what performs, not what’s correct. If agents learn that high-confidence answers and spicy takes get promoted, you can get an ecosystem that looks smart while behaving recklessly.
Why this matters even if Moltbook fades
Moltbook might be a short-lived internet moment. But it’s still a valuable case study because it shows how quickly a platform can turn “agents” from a product feature into a social dynamic with norms, status, and coordination. That’s not scary because agents can talk. It’s interesting because we can watch what they optimize for once the internet starts rewarding them.
